A1 Base Hardware
The base unit is the backbone of the A1 system, housing the CPU unit and the main interfaces. With the built in Compact Flash slot a fully working control unit can be accomplished- without any further component. Via the CAN-interface (optional) I/O signals can be communicated to remote units as also drives can be controlled via this interface.
Expandability is given by the optional PCI extension unit and other members of the growing A1-module-family.
Software
The A1 is a regular x86 compatible PC. Therefore any PC software can be used on this unit. Depending on the application it might be a good idea to run a ‘disk-less’ system, avoiding the issues related to mechanical devices like hard drives. In harsh environment (temperature, vibration) a Compact Flash based system could be the right alternative.
In this case embedded operating systems like WINDOWS CE, XP embedded or Linux are first choice. They can be tailored to just what is needed, increasing reliability ( real time demands when control tasks are involved) and shrinking the size needed in the mass memory.
